Nearly two decades as a federal prosecutor — including serving as United States Attorney for the Central District of Illinois — combined with two decades as lead trial counsel in multimillion-dollar commercial disputes, brought to the negotiating table. Now devoted full-time to mediation, resolving complex civil disputes across a broad array of industries — without the cost or uncertainty of trial.
Before turning to mediation, Jan Paul Miller spent nearly two decades as a federal prosecutor — first as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Maryland, where he prosecuted major criminal cases and represented the United States in civil actions, rising to Chief of the Narcotics Section, Senior Litigation Counsel, and Chief of the Southern Division. As an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Miller led trial teams in numerous jury trials, ranging in length from two days to three months.
In 2002, Miller was appointed United States Attorney for the Central District of Illinois by President George W. Bush. As U.S. Attorney, Miller led a team of 29 Assistant U.S. Attorneys, coordinating law enforcement efforts across the district's 46 counties, and made white-collar crime a top priority — his office secured the nation's first conviction for kickbacks tied to Iraq war government contracts, and recovered millions of dollars in reimbursements and penalties owed to the government for Medicare and Medicaid overcharges. Miller’s work as a prosecutor has been commended by numerous investigative agencies and earned him awards from the U.S. Department of Justice and the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators.
In 2005, Miller joined Thompson Coburn LLP in St. Louis as a business litigation partner. In that role, Miller represented Fortune 500 companies, small corporations, private businesses, partnerships, and individuals in a wide array of civil disputes. While at Thompson Coburn, Miller acted as lead trial counsel in numerous jury and bench trials, representing both plaintiffs and defendants over the years. Miller also worked extensively with the firm's Health Care practice group, representing health care entities before the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and conducted internal investigations ranging from employee misconduct to Sarbanes-Oxley matters. In 2026, Miller retired from the firm to devote himself full-time to mediation. As a result, clients get a neutral who has spent a 40 year career representing parties on both sides of the table, and taken countless cases from the conference room to the courtroom.

Trial experience changes how a mediator reads a case. Jan Paul Miller first-chaired cases throughout seventeen years in the U.S. Attorney's Office and, later, case after case as a partner at Thompson Coburn — experience that helps both sides see their case clearly, including the risks of not settling.
Now devoted full-time to mediation, that perspective tends to shorten the distance between parties and move disputes toward resolution faster.
